July 26

Injured 3rd baseman Ed Falys announced last night (Extra Innings Club) that he is planning a return to the Veterans lineup. The timing of Ed's announcement couldn't be better. Heading into this weekend's tourney Manager Al Jackson will need all the help he can find.
Due to the early tournament date many Vets players will be unavailable due to vacation commitments.

July 26

Doug Walls made his return from the disabled list a memorable one. Lil Doug stroked an RBI single in his first at-bat of the season. Defensively, Doug showed no sign of rust, single-handedly retiring all three Spanish Flyer batters in the 1st inning. A sterling performance all around! Just imagine if Dougie had been in the lineup for the entire season?

July 25

It's that time of year again. The 2001 Tournament is scheduled for this weekend. Please check the 'Schedule & Results' Page for game times.

July 8

'Was that the retired/injured/.800 hitting shortstop who was seen at the Pitt Meadows outdoor batting cage on Monday afternoon? Could the Little Man really be contemplating a comeback at second base before the end of the 2001 season?'

July 5

Debbie Irving pays her bar tab. All we can say is "It's about time!"

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT!!
Best quote of the evening belongs to Outfielder Paul Wuttunee. Discussing teammate Jim Senay's strikeout against Richmond Savings Paul was quoted as saying "If it's white and it's coming at him, he'll swing!" Good one Paul!

SOUR GRAPES DEPT!!
Who was that player at the Extra Innings Club complaining that Nancy McCabe robbed him of his first triple of the season?

July 5

Norm Gramchuk made his Veterans debut last night against Richmond Savings. Norm previously played with the Hot Wings in the GVCUSL. Welcome aboard Norm!

June 21

It was reported last night that spunky Vet player Shelly Calhoun is in hospital. Her teammates wish her a speedy recovery!

June 19

Veterans web site is one year old today. Thanks to Doug Walls, Ed Falys, and Darcy Grendus for providing their time and energy in making the site a success.

June 14

It has been reported that ex-Elco player Al Morawski and his wife have a new kid. A Boy Kid! That's all we know. Congratulations Big Al!!

June 1

CGUL radio, voice of the Vets, has reported that third baseman Ed Falys may be through for the season. Ed injured his shoulder during the 4th inning of the team's first victory of the season against the Beachcombers.

Mr Falys was quoted as saying

My doctor reluctantly gave me the news this afternoon (May 31) that I'd have to miss the rest of the softball season with my dislocated shoulder. All I could think of was that YES! I had 'FINALLY' made it onto the Veterans website 'Pass It On' section.
No sports for two months. Foot hockey - out. Softball - out. Jogging the seawall - naaaaaah - ask again in 2 weeks.

This comes as a big blow to the Vets as they appeared to be finally turning things around after a slow start to the season.

May 22

Congrats to Ex-Elco player Kris Jerstad on the birth of a new son, Matthew. Best wishes from all your ex-teammates.

May 18

It was reported today that Catcher Darcy Grendus has played his last game for the Vets. Work commitments will prevent Darcy from attending games for the balance of the regular season.

However, the Vets catcher will be joining his teammates for the post-game festivities at the EXTRA INNINGS CLUB (aka Eldorado Hotel Lounge)

May 5

All Vet players and fans are invited to join the EXTRA INNINGS CLUB which meets after every Veterans game at the Eldorado Hotel Lounge. (Kingsway & Nanaimo)

Come out, sip a cool draft, and listen to Doug Walls explain how he achieved his .800 batting average last season.

It's great for the whole family as long as they are 19 years of age or older. Besides, we need to increase our bar bill total if we intend to see a large return on the Eldorado's generous 10% refund offer. SEE YOU AT THE 'ELDO' !!!!

May 5

The Eldorado Hotel announced Wednesday evening that they would be sponsoring the Vets Ball club for the 2001 season. A $100.00 cheque was presented to team rep Jim Senay after the Vets opening game against Planet X.
Eldorado Management has also promised to refund 10% of the team's bar/food bill at the end of the season.

A BIG THANKS to the 'Eldo' for their financial support.

March 16

Ex-Elco player Rob Scott has been selected to represent Canada at the 2001 World Indoor Lawn Bowling Championship (Mixed Pairs Events) which will be held March 28 - April 1, 2001 - Belfast Indoor Bowling Club, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Congratulations Rob. Make us proud !!!

March 1

It has been confirmed that VETS Catcher Darcy Grendus will be rejoining the work force after a long layoff.

BAD NEWS! The new position will require the VETS 2000 RBI leader to work afternoon shifts which means Mr Consistency may miss the majority of games during the upcoming season. More later.

February 18

Report out of Coquitlam states that Vets shortstop Doug Walls could miss entire 2001 season due to a nagging hip injury. CGUL radio, voice of the Vets, uncovered the story on Tuesday, February 13th but waited for confirmation from the diminutive shortstop before announcing it today.

The following statement from Doug Walls:

"I went to visit the doctor for the results of my X-rays and it turns out that it wasn't a pulled groin muscle that hampered me during most of last season (just think what I could have hit if I was healthy!).

The problem is wear and tear on the right hip caused by old age. It seems my hip is 63 years old while the rest of my body is that of a 20-year-old athlete. So the advice is to rest it as much as possible -- no jogging, no long walks, heavy lifting or ... softball!"

Could this be the beginning of the end? Stay tuned!!

February 12

Rumour has it that ex-Gaffer/Elco player, Patti McNeil (Grendus), will be making a third trip to the altar. Wedding scheduled for May 26th in Ontario!

January 20

Congratulations to ex-Vet George West, and new bride Sharron, on their recent wedding. It was a surprise to us!

January 20

Unconfirmed report that Outfielder Sean McCabe may hang up his cleats due to a nagging injury. We're gonna miss you Sean!
