ROCKETS 14, VETERANS 9
The Veterans had high expectations entering their first VRSL Tournament.
Winning both games in their pool would assure advancement to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Vets could not muster a consistent attack in Game 1, and were defeated by the Rockets of the 'Angels' Division, 14 — 9.

VETERANS 5, ONE HIT WONDER 4
A different Veterans club showed up for Game 2. The Vets displayed an air-tight defense allowing the Wonder only one run over the first 6 innings. The Wonder came close, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Vets hung on to claim a well-deserved 5 — 4 victory.

One Hit Wonder & Rockets played the final round-robin of Pool 'B' at 1:30 pm.
The Wonder creamed the Rockets 28 — 10 to advance to the semis.

Although each team completed the round with an identical win/loss record, the Wonder advanced based on run differential.

  • One Hit Wonder - plus 17
  • Veterans - minus 4
  • Rockets - minus 13

The Matball Rec Division Championship was played at 5:30 pm. The finalists were both from the Royals Division — the Madbatters and One Hit Wonder.
The contest went down to the final at-bat with the Madbatters prevailing by a score of 14 — 13.

Only Sharleen Jackson and Darcy Grendus were on hand to witness the finals.
So ends another Veterans softball season.

August 10

VETERANS 19, ROGERS WIRELESS 2
Tammy Daly was giving her second coaching assignment of the season and she proved once again that the wrong people are managing the Vets.
Tammy managed the team to an easy season-ending victory over the hapless Rogers Wireless club, 19 — 2.

Tammy employed a new method to determine the starting lineup — an alphabetic batting order by player's first name. Regardless, it was another victory for the Blue shirts.

Our inaugural VRSL season has to be considered a success. The Vets ended the campaign with a 8-6-1 win-loss-tie record, good enough for fourth place in the tough 'Royals' Division.

Congratulation to Doug McDonald — the Veterans 2005 Batting Champion.
Big 'D' finished the season with a .829 batting average.
Even more impressive were Doug's 24 extra-base hits.   (34 hits overall)
Doug McDonald was the 7th different player to win the batting crown since 1999.

Veterans Batting Champions over the past 7 seasons:

  • 1999 - Ed Falys
  • 2000 - Al Jackson
  • 2001 - Jim Senay
  • 2002 - Paul Wuttunee
  • 2003 - Len Fong
  • 2004 - Darcy Grendus
  • 2005 - Doug McDonald

Darcy Grendus won the RBI Crown — 27 ribbies, his third consecutive RBI title. And Ed Falys led the club in total hits with 38.

The final Extra Innings Club set a season-high for attendance. A total of 15 Vets, plus 2 fans, attended the final post-game get-together of the year.
Darcy Grendus won the 2005 Barfly Award with 15 appearances. (Sad, isn't it?)

The highlight of the evening was the wedding gift presentation to Fred Hawkshaw & fiance, Christina. The Vets presented a card containing a cash gift of $140.00 US.
Fred and Christina appreciated the gesture. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN - In 1951, the Confederate Baseball League included creative North Van teenagers (clockwise from upper left) John Walls, Doug Walls, Ralph Bower, Don Duplissie, Ross Clarke and Cece Stevenson.

Jun 16 2005

Back in the days when kids relied on imagination — you know, before there were television sets in every home and adults had not yet organized every conceivable sport for youngsters six years old and up — John and Doug Walls invented the Confederate Baseball League.
The Walls brothers, now approaching 70 years old, have encyclopedic recall of their growing-up years in North Vancouver in the 1940s and '50s.
If their memories are right on, it just might have been 54 years ago today on June 16, 1951 (a Saturday near the end of school that year) that their Confederate Baseball League was officially" founded.

John had just turned 15. Doug was almost 14.
The Walls had been enthralled by a highlight film of the 1946 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox shown at Ridgeway school when John was in Grade 5 and Doug was in Grade 4.
So they began playing scrub ball during the summers of '47 through '50 on the Ridgeway grounds, then on a vacant lot near their home at 802 East 4th Street, until they entered Sutherland Junior High when it opened in September 1950.
Playing scrub (a game with no teams, just two or three at bat and the rest in the field) was fine, but the Walls boys wanted much more.
So they created the Confederate Baseball League. For short, they called it Confedi ball.
In Confedi ball, two players batted. A pitcher and outfielder opposed them.
The playing area, marked out by jackets and tee-shirts, was narrower than a regular baseball diamond. The left field foul line was the same, but the right side boundary was an imaginary line through the pitcher, the base at second and out to centre field.
There was also a hit line stretching from just past third base to just beyond second. Balls hit on the ground in front of the hit line were outs.
The hit line and right side foul line were adjusted as they and their friends got older and could cover more territory.
But they didn't just play Confedi ball, which were five inning games. They kept standings and detailed statistics, which is another reason they sometimes adjusted the hit and foul lines. They didn't want astronomical batting averages. They wanted numbers that reflected major league stats.
Best of all, they typed up accounts of the games, laid it all out like a real newspaper — complete with artwork — and printed up to 30 copies on a hectograph duplicator, a predecessor to mimeograph and Gestetner machines.
"Each player represented a team," Doug was recalling this week, projecting himself back to his boyhood days. "I was the Indians. John was the Giants and later the Yankees; Don Duplissie, the Dodgers; Ross Clarke, the Phillies; Cece Stevenson, the Braves; and Ralph Bower, the Yankees.
"So if John and I played against Duplissie and Clarke and we won, the Giants and Indians would both get a win. The Dodgers and Phillies would get losses."
John points out, "We'd rotate the players so you'd play with different fellows each game."
Others, like Vic Larson, Larry Harris, Ron Powell, Mickey Bryant, Bud Richardson, Joey McMillan, Tony Pawlett, Johnny Robinson, Tom Andrews and Robin Tarr joined in at times during the Confederate League's six-season existence.
They played that first year — and thus the league's name — at Confederation Park, which is what the field just north of Mahon Park was then called before it became Kinsman Stadium.
Of course Confederation Park's beautiful emerald green field was reserved exclusively for all the community's important soccer, rugby and football contests.
It was surrounded by an imposing, eight-foot-high wooden fence.
"We just climbed over it," confesses Doug. "The biggest guy would boost you over and then you'd kind of pull the next one up.
"The day school got out, we'd meet there at 10 o'clock every morning and play right through 'til dinnertime. We didn't take time out for lunch. We'd play three or four games.
"If we could get four guys to come back after dinner, we'd ride our bikes home to where we were living then in the 300-block East 20th, have a quick dinner and jump back on our bikes and race back to the park and play until it got dark. We could squeeze in a couple more games.
"After every game, we'd sit down and work out the box score and the batting averages so everybody would know what they were hitting."
Eventually they got caught inside the park and were booted off. But they convinced City parks staff to cut the grass — "weeds really," John notes — at North Van High's lower field (now Norsemen Park) so they could play there.
Later the Confederate League moved to Mahon Park.
During the life of the league, the record for home runs in one season was 37 by Don Duplissie in 1951, the same year John Walls established the all-time won-lost pitching record of 15-4. John hit .386 that season, Duplissie .358 and Clarke .309.
John and Doug actually remembered these stats as they reminisced about their pseudo-big league this week. They didn't have to look them up.
Major league record books show that Duplissie would have ranked behind the 1951 National League home run leaders (Ralph Kiner had 42 dingers and Gil Hodges 40) but ahead of the 33 that Gus Zernial hit to top the American League. Stan Musial's .355 and Ferris Fain's .344 led the NL and AL in batting in 1951.
Doug Walls was the Confederate League's only .400 hitter, batting a Ted Williams-like .402 in 1952.
The Walls' baseball publications that included stories and Confedi ball statistics were fashioned after The Sporting News, the baseball weekly that gave you all the averages and info about the grand old game that you'd ever want to know; and SPORT, which was the sports periodical long before Sports Illustrated appeared.
"Everybody," explains John, "would get a paper and they all loved to see their name in headlines. We'd have a major writeup and then small ones and we'd have the batting and pitching leaders. Doug and I did all that."
Sadly, not one of their several dozen baseball papers has survived, but I have seen a copy of their 12-page, 1953 pre-season football magazine (yes, they devised a football league each fall too).
It's remarkable what they produced in print using the rudimentary tools of those long-ago days.
In fact, the Confedi papers helped John land a job at The Vancouver Sun as a copy boy, which in turn led to Ralph "Railbird" Bower's livelihood as a photographer and Arv "Ole" Olson's career as a journalist.
It all started when John, after graduating from North Van High in 1955, applied for a position with the Vancouver daily.
He showed copies of the papers he and Doug had made to sportswriter Dick Beddoes. Beddoes passed them on to sports editor Erwin Swangard who was so impressed he hired John.
Later, when The Sun was looking for more copy boys, John called Bower and Olson, two of his North Van High buddies, and they were subsequently hired too.
Ultimately, John was offered a job as a photographer at the paper, but he turned it down and decided to go in for a teaching career instead.
Bower got the photo job which lasted 42 years. Olson became a sportswriter with The Sun for 38 years, specializing in rugby, hockey and golf.
The Walls both ended up as teachers in Burnaby for 25 years or more.
Both still love the game. John, who's been a devoted Red Sox fan for years, has "Fenway" on his car's license plate.
Doug, now 67, still plays softball on a team called the Veterans.
A few years ago the two of them took in games in New York and Boston together.
Ahh, but the days of Confedi ball were the greatest.
(This is episode 180 from Len Corben's treasure chest of stories — the great events and the quirky — that bring to life the North Shore's rich sports history.)

July 18

Dan & Leslie Gray hosted their 11th Annual Croquet Tournament on July 16th.
The Veterans were represented in the tourney by Al Jackson, Darcy Grendus, Dan Gray and Sharleen Jackson.

Congratulations to Dan Gray for capturing the prestigious 'Gray Cup'.
Dan displayed great croquet skills as he came from behind to overtake runner-up Darcy Grendus in the late stages of the championship round.

VETERANS 5, ONE HIT WONDER 8
The Veterans suffered their first defeat since May 25th as they were edged by the One Hit Wonder 8 — 5.

The Vets defense was superb allowing their opponents only eight runs scored. It was the sixth consecutive game in which the Vets have held the opposition to less than 10 runs. Unfortunately, the Veterans bats fell silent as they could only muster 14 hits, their lowest output of the season.

Catcher Reagan Peachman provided the highlight of the game. She doubled off two Wonder players at the plate as they attempted to score on an outfield hit.

Making a return to the Vets, since being placed on the Disabled List at the start of the season, were Dan Gray and Doug Walls. Although both players are not yet able to play — Dan assisted with umpiring and Dougie cheered on the club from the bench.

The loss dropped the Veterans to 4th place in a tight race for the divison crown. Only three points separate the first and fourth place teams in the very competitive Royals Division.

July 6

BRUISERS 1, VETERANS 26
Women's Coordinator Tammy Daly was handed the reigns to manage the Vets against the Bruisers and she didn't disappoint. With Tammy at the helm, the Vets cruised to a 26 — 1 victory over the Bruisers.

The Veterans won all three games to sweep the season series against the Bruisers, outscoring their opponents 71 — 12.

Tammy became the first woman to manage the Vets since Patti McNeil in the early 1980's.

Ed Falys, Fred Hawkshaw, and Doug McDonald led the assault with five hits apiece. Doug McDonald inched ahead in the RBI race with 5 ribbies. He now tops the Vets with 23 RBI.

It was the Vet's fifth consecutive victory of the season, vaulting them into a tie for second place in the Royals division. If it wasn't for Darcy Grendus's throwing error, the Vets would have had a shutout.

ROGERS WIRELESS 7, VETERANS 14
Notch another win for the Vets. The boys and girls in blue won their 4th consecutive game as they doubled Rogers Wireless 14 — 7.

Leading the hit parade were Doug McDonald, Darcy Grendus, Al Jackson, and Ed Falys, with four hits apiece. Jim Senay lead the team with five RBI on 2 hits and a SAC fly.

Playing her first game with the Vets was Barb Ross. And Barb played well considering it was her first ball game in a number of years. Great game, Barb !

The Vets hope to make it five in a row when they play the Bruisers next week.

June 22

VETERANS 8, DODGERS 4
The Veterans continued their winning ways as they won their third consecutive game, downing the first-place Dodgers 8 - 4.

The Vets played their best defensive game of the season allowing a team-low four runs against.

Leading the hit parade were Tammy Daly with five, and Darcy Grendus chipped in four of his own. Pitcher Nancy McCabe went the distance, earning her 3rd victory of the year, lowering her ERA to 10.97. And Ryan Taylor continues his assault on the record book. At the half way point of the season Ryan's batting average is an incredible .950.

Player update:
There could be a new face on the Vets next week. Planning to join the Veterans is Barb Ross, sister of Jim Senay. We look forward to meeting Barb. Everyone give her a big welcome when you meet.

June 16

As the June 8th game against the One Hit Wonder was postponed we will be playing a makeup game on Wednesday, August 3rd at Gordon Park SW.

Fred Hawkshaw — June 28th, Darcy Grendus — June 30th.

May 30

Iron Man Doug Walls will be undergoing the knife this Thursday. Doug's surgery is scheduled for June 2nd at Burnaby General Hospital.

Although Doug will be out for the season, he should be back at the park soon.

We need Doug back at the park as it is costing too much to call him on Darcy's cell phone after every game.

Besides, if Doug doesn't play again this season, we'll have to listen to him tell us how he hit 1.000 in his only game in 2005.

May 20

DODGERS 22, VETERANS 18
With only seven regulars in attendance the Veterans lost their 2nd consecutive game of the season.

The Vets played well considering they were playing short-handed. But sadly they were overmatched by the Dodgers losing 22 — 18.

Vets highlights included a mammoth home run by Darcy Grendus — his 2nd of the season. Also homering were Fred Hawkshaw and Terry Eng. Nancy McCabe and Ed Falys each had five hits apiece to lead the club. Falys also drove in 6 runs and leads the Veterans with 12 RBI after four games.

Thanks to Doug McDonald, Ed Falys, Fred Hawkshaw, Tammy Daly, Darcy Grendus, Sharleen Jackson, and Nancy McCabe for attending the game and preventing a default situation. And special thanks to Terry Eng (MadBatters) who joined the Vets on a one-game basis.

May 13

VETERANS 10, MADBATTERS 13
The Veterans lost their first VRSL game of the season as the MadBatters outscored our heroes in blue 13 — 10.

The Vets struggled at the plate as they were shutout in three innings and only managed one run in two others.

Ryan Taylor and Ed Falys led the Veterans offense. They had three hits apiece and combined for 7 RBI.

Next week's game should pose another challenge. The Vets will be without the services of five players. Al Jackson, Paul Wuttunee and Jim Senay are off on their Major League Baseball junket. As well, Jane Senay and Michelle Connell will also be unavailable.

May 10

More bad news for the Vets. 2nd Baseman Doug Walls has reported that he will miss the balance of the season.

Doug requires an operation which will force him to the sidelines. But no fear, Mr. Iron Man will still be attending games and joining the team at the Extra Innings Club. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

May 8

VETERANS 16, ONE HIT WONDER 16
The Vets are still unbeaten as they came back with 10 runs in the final two innings to record a 16 — 16 tie against the One Hit Wonder last Wednesday.

Ed Falys was perfect at the plate going 4 for 4. And Bob Ostafiew appeared in his first game of the young season, smacking 3 hits (2 singles, 1 double). Bobby shut down the Wonder in the bottom of the 7th inning to preserve the tie.

BRUISERS 8, VETERANS 21
The Veterans began the 2005 season on a good note. The Vets pounded out a 21 — 8 win against the Bruisers for their first VRSL victory.

    PLAYERS OF THE GAME

  • Nancy McCabe went 5 for 5 at the plate as well as smacking 4 RBI.
  • Doug McDonald smashed a double and triple to drive in five runs.
  • Fred Hawkshaw was 3 for 3 — 2 doubles, 1 triple and 3 runs scored.
  • Sharleen Jackson and Tammy Daly each stroked four hits apiece.

March 11

A message from our Jenn Eadie:

"I'm still in the UK and should be here until November as that's when my visa runs out. I will then be off to South East Asia for a month or two and then to New Zealand for a year. That's the plan anyway! Off to Paris in May so looking forward to that. Other than that, life here is good. Working away and trying to keep busy on the weekends with short trips around England. Unfortunately no ball for me, but swim a couple times a week with a club, so that is good.

Hope the new league goes well this year and the team actually wins a few games! I really enjoyed coming back though and hope when I return to Vancouver (whenever that may be) I am allowed to come back again."
March 10

Kristina Davis has announced she is leaving the Vets.

"I hate to do this but I'm resigning this year from baseball. I was offered to play closer to home and for now that works better for me and I will also be playing volleyball in my area.
But if you are short a game and need someone, please don't hesitate to email. It was a hard decision cause there are a lot of good people that I will miss on the team."
March 7

The Veterans Softball Club is pleased to announce that Tammy Daly has accepted the new position of 'Women's Coordinator'.

It will be Tammy's responsibility to ensure adequate female participation at all scheduled games and team functions. Other duties to be assigned as this position develops.
Thanks Tammy !

February 20

The polls have closed and here are the final results.

I received responses from 18 of the 19 registered Veteran players.
Two 'Remain in the CUSL' voters stated they really didn't care which league we play in —
as long as they get to play ball.

Our registration request has been submitted to the VRSL.
The Vets have requested to be entered into the Matball-REC division.
This would be equivalent to the CUSL-B Division.
There are three Matball-REC divisions —
2 on Wednesdays & one on Monday evening.
The Vets have requested to play Wednesdays.

TEAM MEETING — Wednesday, March 2 — 7:30 pm.
To be held at the Eldorado Hotel Lounge — Kingsway & Nanaimo.

At the meeting we will be discussing our move to the VRSL.
(specific rule differences, league schedule, tournament format, and projected player attendance* for the 2005 season)

* We want to get an idea how many games we can expect from players. We will be scheduled to play the same night every week. (14-game schedule)
Regular Season begins the last week of April.

Knowing we will be playing the same night every week should make it easier for those players that need to plan their work/family commitments. If you're going on vacation during the season, getting married, coach your kids' sports team or work odd shifts - give us an estimate how many games you think you'll be able to attend. This info would greatly assist us to ensure we field a full squad every week.

PLAYER FEES

The Player Fees for the 2005 season are as follows:

$40.00 — due by March 2, 2005.
$50.00 — received after March 2.

If you are unable to attend the Team Meeting and want to take advantage of the discounted Player Fee please send your cheque to:

February 13

Dan Gray announced at the Extra Innings Club last week that he will not be playing this season. A nagging back injury will keep Danny out of the Vets lineup. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

February 12

Many thanks to those players that made the trek to the Veterans Softball Club meeting on February 9th. Those in attendance included:

Darcy Grendus, Ed Falys, Al Jackson, Tammy Daly, Bob Ostafiew, Dan Gray, Michelle Connell, Doug Walls, Nancy McCabe, Ryan Taylor and Doug McDonald.

There was much discussion regarding our proposal to leave the Credit Union Softball League. Many were in favour of remaining in the CUSL. And there are those of us that feel it's time to make a change.
As the Veterans Manager I feel I'm in a 'no-win' position.

1) If the Vets leave the CUSL there are a number of players that will resent making a change and may quit the team altogether.

2) If the Vets remain in the CUSL there are players who will resent staying and may quit the team.

I don't want to lose any more sleep over this issue, so I am leaving the decision to you — the players.

All players will be asked a simple question —
Do you wish to remain in the CUSL or move to a new league?
An email is being sent to all players for their vote.

All votes will remain confidential and the final results will be communicated to all concerned once finalized.

January 30

Although it's only January the softball season will soon be upon us.
And there is a important decision we must make.

Are the Veterans to remain in the Credit Union Softball League or move to a new league?

A Team Meeting is scheduled for: Wednesday, February 9th — 7:30 pm

Eldorado Hotel Lounge — aka Extra Innings Club

Manager Grendus attended the CUSL meeting last week and confirmed the Veterans will be playing in the 'A' Division for the 5th consecutive season.
We were hoping that with our dismal won-loss record (1-11-2) the Vets would be returning to the 'B' Division in 2005. But no such luck!

Darcy will be attending the AGM of the Vancouver Recreational Softball League on Tuesday, Feb 1st. He plans to gather more information on their organization.

Come out to hear what challenges are facing the Vets. And voice your opinions on what we should be doing to address them.

THIS IS YOUR TEAM SO PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND !!

If you're unable to make it to the meeting then email Darcy your thoughts.
Or call him at home — 604-732-4680

For those players not planning to play in 2005.
Let me know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE !!
Then we can arrange to find new players, if necessary.
Also, we would want to buy-back your Veterans jersey.
